Entries - Embellished Bowls/Platters

Totara from Opotiki that was carved to represent old weathered and river stained totara. Carved and ebonized to give the river stain appearance leaving internal bowl original colour for contrast.  Finish with French polish.  H=75mm  W=305mm

Turned Black Maire embellished with three leadfree Pewter castings. Sanded to 1200 grit and finished with 5 coats of Matt Dulux Duramax spray to provide a hardwearing bowl. Size 90x175x175mm

A pohutukawa bowl with a poured pewter rim and foot.  Finished with Fiddes wax.  100mm wide and 60mm high. 

Made from Pohutukawa and embellished with pyrography on the exterior, painted black, it is a perfect hand sized piece, finished with sanding sealer and Beall buffed.  160mm x 55mm.

Walnut. Sanded to 300, Danish Oil, Yorkshire Grit. H(80)DIA(130)

Heart Rimu Platter 400 Dia x 40mm deep. 6 coats of 50% thinned lacquer. Buffed on the Beal System.

Pohutukawa bowl 145 diameter by 70mm high embellished with hand beaten pewter panels of extinct, rare and threatened native New Zealand species. 

Manawa (ancient mangrove) only found in kauri swamps in Northland it was presumed to be wiped out in Taupo eruption. Carving represents the eruption and internal and underside of bowl left to appreciate the timber.  Finish French polish.  H=65mm  W=270mm

This banksia bowl is pierced and embellished with a red lace-like rim.  Diameter: 180 mm; height: 60 mm.

Made from Kahikatea and embellished with geometric pyrography and painted black, then Beall buffed.  180mm x 75mm.

My Ridged Bowls define a contemporary visual language in woodturned homewares. Inviting touch and closer inspection, this Kauri bowl features an exterior of fine grooves using a 35° gouge, against a smooth interior finished with beeswax.  Height: 56mm. Diameter: 185mm

The graceful double Koru edge perfectly sets off this beautifully figured Macrocarpa bowl.  Quilted Macrocarpa, Carved, textured, Paua shell, Mirotone Danish oil, Carnauba wax. 125mm x 45mm.

Inspired by the healing powers of our new garden, following life-saving surgery. Wax-eyes, fantail and bumblebee on a magnolia tree. Ancient kauri decorated with pyrography and 24 carat gold leaf.  First turning project. Natural finish, 210mm diameter x 62mm thick.

This piece was turned and carved from Matai. It was finished with Danish oil and Beall buffed. The dimensions are 123 mm wide and 70 mm high.

Two square dishes made of Himalayan Cedar with copper gilding on the edges with a Danish oil finish. Size: 110mm square, 20mm high, 3mm thickness 

Ash (Fraxinus) with its characteristic radial lines turned 230Ø x 35mm height and uniform thickness. Base carved to three feet with minimal clearance. Natural finish to show the distinct grain pattern and allow the feet to be a feature.

Made from Camphor Laurel and embellished with pyrography.  Painted Metallic Blue and black to depict the shifting sands and waterways into the lagoon.  Finished using the Beall buffing system. 215mm x 50mm.

Walnut embellished with leadfree pewter - melted , cast and turned to form a shiny contrasting rim. Finished with 4 coats of gloss Dulux Duramax spray to providing a very durable result. Size 75x180x180mm
