Entries - Hollow Forms/Vases

Two haves joined at centre line with pyrography, acrylic paint and deer antler bud added after it was turned to fit.  Wall thickness of each half 15mm.  260 mm wide by 100mm high

Laburnum small hollow form.  Size 50mm dia x 50mm high.

 My "Less is More" slanted Pohutukawa ornamental vase allows for simplicity to expose the pure beauty and perfection of the timber. Friction wax finish. Height 150mm x width 108mm.  Wall thickness 1.5mm with heavier base for stability.

A Magnolia branch was carefully turned into a large, bulb-shaped vase, with a rounded body that tapers towards the opening. Three carved feet lift and support the form. Finished with Haarlem Danish oil and buffed. 52cm High x 20cm Wide.

Mantaray made from  Sapele Mahogany 210 x 210 x 80mm. Finished with a time lost finish called French polishing to give depth to the rich grain. The vessel has been turned to the same thickness as the wings ending up light as a bird 

"Mollusc" Carved/textured Japanese Cedar to represent a shell of a decayed fictional Mollusc. Using the Cedar's natural colour Danish oiled then sealed with several coats of satin lacquer,  280mm(11")H x 120mm(5")at the widest point.

Hollow form bowl, with embellishing and piercing. From Totara from the Garden.  Wide 150mm, height 90mm 

European olive (Olea europaea) vase. Copper wire filled cracks. Pure Danish oil (tung oil & citrus thinners).  150 mm diameter, 225 mm tall.

 Rootball of unknown tree found by the road. Gravel and dirt removed to find a vase inside. Beall buff wax finish. 18 x 11cm

laminated ply and resin 210mmH 120mmW.I wanted to create the illusion of thr resin disapearing into  the ply 

Made from Pohutukawa  (New Zealand Xmas Tree). 300 x110mm. A favourite wood to turn, the form reaching for the sky and the addition of carving in 3 d  detail makes the work come alive.

Dried flower vase. Timber came from a farm in Dargaville and turned green. When finishing the vase the features were fantastic. Added the eucalypt Burl as contrasting feature to balance the look.  Height 265mm, width 285mm.

Once turned red gum vase from an occluded branch wound. Rim part shaped to match the natural wave. Nylon brushed finish. Pure Danish oil (tung oil & citrus thinners), carnauba wax.  180 mm diameter, 190 mm tall.

Cherry vessel and plate. The round-bottomed vessel fits into the concave base and can be positioned at different angles for display. 270mm × 210mm × 230mm.

Figured Red Gum hollow form. Red Gum body 220mm wide x 75mm high. Ebony finial 120mm high x 35mm wide at the base. Ebony foot 30mm high x 43mm wide, Total height 230mm. Ian Fish Lacquer - finish.

From a piece of Box Elder (Acer negundo).  Cut with the outer natural edge to be at the top to give some additional interest in the form.  Finished with Supreme Danish Oil and polished with a lambswool buffing pad.

Large segmented vessel constructed and turned from Ash with a black marbled resin collar. 1235mm tall, 360mm wide with enhanced grain and a satin lacquer finish, which emphasises the form and the changing grain orientation of the individual segments.
