Proving there is no such thing as ugly wood, this Natural Edge vase had been turned and hollowed from the root ball of a Rose Bush. Height 140mm, Diameter: 95mm. Finish: Spray Lacquer.

It took 17 years but I finally found a suitable piece of wood to make a piece similar to one I purchased in 2009 in Christchurch. Akeake vase on Flowering Cherry base, 310mm tall, base is 200mm wide x 170mm deep, finished with Haarlem Oil.

Crafted from Ancient Coromandel Swamp Kauri, this semi-hollow vessel preserves the timber’s distinctive natural edges. Finished with Haarlem Danish oil, the surface is buffed to a smooth sheen. Dimensions: 19 cm in height × 15 cm in diameter.

Small apple wood burl bowl, 110mm x 90mm

A natural edge bowl turned from a burr from a Granny Smith Apple tree.  Measuring approximately 200mm round x100mm high, with a wall thickness varying from 4-8mm.  The intersecting crotches have created some amazing grain patterns.

This is a natural edge bowl turned from a burr from a Granny Smith apple tree and then mounted onto a piece of driftwood which was painted black. Measuring approximately 250mm x 250mm x 200mm high and has a wall thickness of approximately 8-10mm.

Birdseye Silver Beech bowl finished with Danish oil. Height; 101 mm; diameter; 460 mm, depth; 95 mm.

Turned from NZ grown Blackwood with textured Rimu base. Starting with only a partial piece of wood, the tricky challenge was to turn it to showcase the small burls on top, framing the heartwood.  Dimensions 190mm tall x 150mm diameter

Red beech burl plain bowl 90mm H x 200mm Dia. 6 coats sprayed lacquer. buffed.

Once turned natural edge bowl in burled river oak (Casuarina cunninghamiana). Pure Danish oil (tung oil & citrus thinners).  280 mm diameter, 180 mm tall, 7 mm wall thickness at the rim.

Burr Platter made from Southland beech burl. Boasting a natural live edge, this stunning piece of beech burl has been turned into a nice decorative platter finished with EEE and carnauba wax. 25cm diameter and 4 cm high.

Turned from a branch, nice challenge, chose a bit of form, a nice day for turning, Wide 180mm high 150mm.

Cork oak tree, started life in Lower Hutt, grown from an acorn, transplanted to Waikanae 20 years ago, storm damaged tree, timber rescued from firewood pile.  Finish is walnut oil.  Sizes: width 235mm x height 145mm.

Banksia bowl demonstrating fukinsei, the Japanese word for asymmetry and balanced irregularity.  Finished with Danish oil. 20 cm diameter, 10 cm high.

Fantasia grows in dreams, not a known specimen, just an illusion.  Looking at the work of a well-known French turner I was inspired to create something that escapes reality. Kowhai wood (Sophora microphylla), Danish oil. Height 350mm X 150mm Wide

A piece of Puriri wood (New Zealand Mahogany) given to me by a friend, turned out to be a lovely piece with rich depth grain and very dense.  Wide 200mm Depth 90mm
