Entries - Embellished Bowls/Platters

A stingray-inspired bowl, multi-axis turned from Liquid Amber with a hand-shaped Kwila tail. The bowl rests naturally on its two downswept wings and tail, creating a sculptural form. Finished with Tung oil and Beall buffed. 140mm wide at wings, 60mm tall.

A simple bowl. Wood: unknown. Size: 180mm Dia 75mm high

Kowhai. Shaped to highlight the grain patterns.  Danish Oil. Sanded to 300 Yorkshire grit.  H(100)DIA(120)

Bowl turned from spalted beech with three carved feet and finished with bee's wax. Size: 70mm high, 190mm diameter.

Copper Beech 220hx 229wmm 3mm thick.  The grain spalting is caused by a fungus attacking the wood while still wet.  The contrast in the grain has so many features you will see a different pattern when viewing each time you look.

Spalted Silver Birch bowl. Polychromer pencils depict a scene of silver birch trees and birds using the natural spalting of the wood as the background. Finished with lacquer and wax. 16.5cm x 4.5cm.

From a wind-thrown olive tree in Cornwall Park, Auckland.  Old enough to have been planted by Logan Campbell. Finished with spray lacquer. 230 wide and 70 high

I hope you recognise this dude.  A small square plate of unknown wood standing on four corner feet. 135 x 135 x 12mm.  Pyrography with a lacquer finish.

Illustrating the challenges and interaction of the inner and outer surfaces of a 150mm diameter x 100mm high bowl, gaining their harmony through shape while embracing the visual differences with the use of, Rimu, Jarrah and Puriri, wax finished.

A shallow dished platter forms the canvas for this whimsical piece.  The artwork is outlined with pyrography and coloured with pencils.  The wood is kauri and measures 280 wide x 18 mm high.  It is finished in spray lacquer.

The two different shades of leather, woven around the edge of this platter, enhance the rich colours in the wood.  The weaving portrays the interwoven lives around us:  family, friends, neighbourhood and community. Finished with beeswax. 385mm x 40mm.

What lies under the deep blue sea? An eight tentacled monster waits for you to dip your finger in the shimmering water. Wet turned Tulip wood. Embellished using pyrography, Eye Candy Ghost pigments and Lumiere paints. 19cm x 9cm high.

Pepperwood from a stack that was hidden away in one of those safe places. Brightness highlighting the small round bowl 100mm x 80mm. The borer struck piece stood out from the firewood pile demanding a new use.
