Entries - Plain Bowls/Platters

Made from a piece of red beech won in a raffle and looking very ugly at the time. I call this piece 'aliens' because of the imagery found in the burl.  Finish is walnut oil.  The main diameter is 325mm, height 50mm, with a 90mm foot.

Red beech harvested from land being cleared for dairy farming on the West Coast.  Given a coat of Haarlem Danish and the Beall buffed.  285 diameter and 90mm high.

Black Walnut 140x100 x 3mm. The grain in this piece just had to stay unembellished so the French polished finish can shows off the grain lying within.

Shallow calabash bowl. 300mm diameter and 70mm high. The wood is Michelia.

A Hawaiian style calabash bowl. Made from matai. 20cm wide, 15cm high.

Camphor bowl 20cm diameter and 10cm tall.

Wood - Cherry.  Size 130mm diameter x 70mm high x 3mm thick

Made from Spalted Beech,  this chunky plate highlights the Spalting in the wood.  Finished with sanding sealer and beall buffed.  140mm x 35mm

End grain turned, made from fresh oak, turned to 3mm thickness, this piece was encouraged to move to create the effect of a cockle shell,  Beall buffed 205mm x 55mm

Very resinous Coulter pine,  33 x 4.5  cm. .8 cm thick. Wet sanded to 400 grit buffed and finished with Organ hard burnishing oil.

Camphor Laurel snatched from the firewood collectors. Wet turned and finished 3 years later.  Osmo oil finish. 220mm diameter and 75mm high.

Fruit bowl from swamp kauri, Mangawhare Dargaville. Shape design to enhance the fiddleback grain. French polish finish.  H=125mm  W=245mm 

Sycamore  finished with sanding sealer and bees wax. 266mm dia x 80mm high

Design follows the form from the book Woodturning projects, a workshop guide to shapes by Mark Baker 2005. H: 4.8 cm, D: 16.5 cm. Wood: plum. Finish: danish oil.

A classical large fruit bowl turned from Juniper. The colour, grain and inclusions make this bowl something else. Dimensions 320mm wide by 90mm high.  

A large platter of spectacular Agathis australis. The grain refulgence and a smooth simple shape are left to speak for themselves. Waxed and buffed. Plywood stand.  505 x 505 x 28mm 

A small scrap of heart Black Walnut leftover from a bigger bowl, too good not to turn into something beautiful. Black walnut, Mirotone 3241, 68mm x 45mm.

Bowl from a Magnolia branch crotch turned green to a 3mm thickness and left to slightly distort while drying. Danish oil finish. Size: 85mm high, 225mm diameter
